Where To Buy Mezuzah Scroll

If you ever open up a mezuzah scroll, you will find two Hebrew portions of the Bible written in the traditional Torah writing of a scribe. The first portion (6:4-9) is a command to the Children of Israel to maintain their love for God throughout all their days and the second portion details both the advantages of following God's words as well as the costs of not following the Torah's precepts.

While the text of all mezuzah scrolls is the same, there are slight variations as to how the text is written. Thus, you will find that we offer Ashkenazi mezuzahs (written according to the traditions of Jews of European descent), Sephardi mezuzahs (written according to the traditions of Jews of North Africa, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean descent) as well as Chasidic mezuzahs (written according to the mystical tradition of the 16th century rabbi, the Arizal).

The Mezuzah is an extremely exact object with dozens of rules governing its production. For example, it must be written on parchment made from a kosher species of animal, such as a cow, a sheep or a goat. Written by hand with a quill made of a feather of a kosher fowl, the scribe must declare his purity of intention before he begins writing and then each time before he writes the name of G-d. Every letter is precise, including the white space surrounding each letter. After the writing is complete, the scroll is checked meticulously by a computer as well as an expert in the field to ensure its Kashrut.

It consists of an outer mezuzah case - often beautifully decorated, in a range of possible materials and designs - with a klaf or parchment scroll inside. The mezuzah scroll text, written by a sofer or professional Jewish scribe, contains an excerpt from the Book of Deuteronomy that commands the Jews to hang these words on the doorposts of their homes.

In addition to rules on where to put a mezuzah, Jewish tradition also dictates how to install a mezuzah on the door. For ideal mezuzah hanging, one should use mounting tape or nails in order to affix the mezuzah case to the doorpost, with the mezuzah scroll placed inside. To help you with the proper way to hang a mezuzah on any doorpost, our store sells double-sided adhesive mounting tape here.

According to Ashkenazi tradition, a mezuzah should be slanted at about a 45-degree angle, pointing towards the inside of the room. In Sephardi tradition, meanwhile, the mezuzah placement is usually straight and completely vertical.

Which way does a mezuzah lean and what is the mezuzah angle? The mezuzah according to Ashkenazi tradition leans to the right towards the inside of the room. It should be at a slight angle, around 45 degrees or less, whatever the width of the doorpost allows, with the top pointing towards the inside of the door and the bottom pointing outwards.

Why do you kiss the mezuzah? There is a Jewish tradition to kiss holy objects, or the fingers or other items that touch them, and a Jewish mezuzah - containing a parchment or mezuzah scroll with holy words of the Torah inside - is one such holy object.

A mezuzah consists of an outer mezuzah case with a klaf or parchment scroll inside. The mezuzah scroll text, written by a professional Jewish scribe, contains an excerpt from the Book of Deuteronomy that specifically mentions the commandment of the mezuzah.

We are Mezuzah true-believers. Every one of our scrolls is handwritten by a certified Torah scribe on real Klaf. It's then checked by our own in-house scribe as well as a sophisticated computer program.

"I just wanted to compliment you on your fast service and the items you sell. The mezuzah and scroll I ordered were absolutely beautiful. The pictures definitely do not do them justice! I will recommend you to everyone!"

At Judaica Place we take Mezuzah Scrolls very seriously and have each mezuzah checked several times for accuracy. We start by having the scroll written by a certified scribe residing in Israel. The next step is important and that is the computer check. Todays technology allows us to have the computer check for accuracy and missing letters which can render a mezuzah not kosher. Then Finally and most important we have our personal sofer scribe inspect each scroll with a critical overview.

These steps ensure that our scrolls are certified, inspected and guaranteed kosher. Unfortunately many sellers are not aware of the importance and significance of a Kosher scroll and don't take the time or spend the monies to have their scrolls checked properly and thus sell Non-kosher mezuzah scrolls, so it's important before purchasing a mezuzah to ask if these measures were taken.

Many Jewish homes contain mezuzahs on every doorway. A mezuzah can be affixed to the doorpost of each room in the home and place of business (including basement, attic, and garage). They should not be placed at the entrance to a bathroom.

Our collection of mezuzah cases range in style. We have antique, Armenian, glass, wood, and more! We also carry multiple color and size options. Gary Rosenthal is a popular artist, and Quest has a number of options your children will love. Michael Aram creates sleek cases for a modern twist on an ancient tradition.

The size of the mezuzah case determines the size of the mezuzah scroll you need. Also note that the size listed for all HaSOFER mezuzah cases is the size of the mezuzah scroll appropriate for that mezuzah case. The case itself will always be slightly taller than that. Click on the links on the top and side of this page to go to our different families of mezuzah cases.

LeDOROT mezuzah cases, made in HaSOFER's own Shomer Shabbat factory, are specially engineered to provide the highest degree of protection for a mezuzah that is exposed to direct sunlight, dampness or extremes in temperature. They are also very handsome for interior doorways.

You're putting the mezuzah on a door frame on which you cannot use screws or nails? Many of our mezuzah cases in each group come with double-sided mounting tape, making them fully self-adhesive. Check for this in the description for each mezuzah.

To learn about the factors you should keep in mind as you choose your mezuzah case read our article The Three Purposes of Your Mezuzah Case. To be sure you're putting your mezuzah up correctly read Where and How to Put Up a Mezuzah. On this page you'll find printable summaries in English, Hebrew and Russian of the laws of how to put up a mezuzah.

Mezuzah parchments come in standard heights of 6, 10, 12, and 15 centimeters. Until recently, mezuzah parchments taller than 6 centimeters were not commonly found, but this has changed as high quality parchment has become more accessible and more reasonably priced. The most commonly used sizes today, and also the most economical, are 10 and 12 centimeter. For a higher quality mezuzah, however, choose the larger, 15 centimeter size. If a small mezuzah scroll is absolutely essential, be prepared to pay more for this, as it is more difficult to write. A 6 centimeter mezuzah parchment is more expensive than a 10 or 12 centimeter parchment of equal quality.

Life expectancy of all of HaSOFER's 10, 12, 15 and 20 centimeter mezuzah parchments is approximately 20 years and not a factor of the price you pay for the klaf. A 6 centimeter mezuzah parchment has a shorter life expectancy as its smaller letters have a smaller surface area for bonding to the parchment. The actual lifespan of a mezuzah klaf varies greatly, depending upon how much it is exposed to heat, cold, dampness, dust, direct sunlight, and other factors.

Except for special circumstances, it is strongly advised by all poskim, rabbinical authorities, to replace existing small mezuzah cases, those less than 6 cm or 2.5 inches tall, with a larger mezuzah case and a mezuzah klaf sized to match. However if you have an heirloom mezuzah case or one with great sentimental or monetary value, we can provide you with a mezuzah klaf to fit it. To determine the size mezuzah parchment you need, measure the internal length and depth of your mezuzah cover carefully, leaving sufficient room for closing the case without crushing or creasing or rolling the parchment too tightly.

All of HaSOFER's mezuzah klafim are written by our own certified sofrim, scribes, who use only the highest quality natural parchment and ink. Each klaf is examined twice manually by certified megihim, examiners, and then also

The laws about mezuzah are very intricate: which doorways require a mezuzah, where and how to put up a mezuzah, how often and how to check them, and when you are permitted to remove a mezuzah. The articles in our STa"M in Halacha and Midrash section will provide you with many of the answers you are looking for. If you still have questions about any of the laws of mezuzah email them to us at mezuzot@HaSOFER.com and we will answer you as quickly as possible.

In reality, just as any other item you possess, a mezuzah scroll can break or get damaged, and it doesn't necessarily have an underlying meaning. The key takeaway is to dispose of it correctly and replace it with a new kosher mezuzah scroll so that your home is properly blessed and protected.

As for the case that is used to hold the mezuzah, once it is used as an accessory for the performance of a Mitzvah, it takes on holiness as well. That being said, if it is used to hold the scroll and becomes damaged, it must also be taken to the Genizah for proper burial. 041b061a72
