Patalghar is a Bengali science fiction film based on the story of the same name by Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay and directed by Abhijit Chaudhuri. The film was released on 21 February 2003 and received critical acclaim for its innovative plot, cinematography, and music. The film stars Soumitra Chatterjee, Biplab Chatterjee, Kharaj Mukherjee, Mita Vasisht, and Joy Sengupta in the lead roles.

The film revolves around a mysterious device invented by a genius scientist Aghor Sen, who lived in the village of Nischintipur 150 years ago. The device can generate sound waves that can put any living being to sleep. Aghor Sen also encountered an alien named Vik, who came from the planet Nyapcha and tried to steal the device. Aghor Sen managed to put Vik to sleep and hid the device in his underground laboratory, called Patalghar. After his death, the device was lost and forgotten.

In the present day, Dr. Bhootnath Nandy, a young scientist, finds Aghor Sen's diary and deciphers the clues to locate Patalghar and the device. However, he is not the only one who is interested in the device. Begum, a gang leader, also wants to get her hands on the device and sends her goons after Bhootnath. Meanwhile, Kartik, a smart and brave boy, inherits Aghor Sen's house and laboratory in Nischintipur. He befriends Bhootnath and helps him to solve the riddles and reach Patalghar. However, they also awaken Vik, who resumes his quest for the device. A series of adventures and dangers follow as Bhootnath, Kartik, Begum, and Vik clash with each other over the device.

The film is a rare example of Bengali science fiction cinema that blends fantasy, comedy, action, and drama. The film explores themes such as scientific curiosity, human greed, alien invasion, friendship, and legacy. The film also pays homage to Bengali literature and culture by incorporating references to Rabindranath Tagore, Satyajit Ray, Sukumar Ray, and others. The film features stunning visuals and special effects that create a realistic and immersive experience for the viewers. The film also boasts of a melodious and catchy soundtrack composed by Debojyoti Mishra.
